Zinc is one of the most important nutrients for the human body, regardless of gender, age or life circumstance. This puts it at the top of the supplementation list for many, particularly given that so many do not consume enough through the diet. Although research is lacking on zinc status in Australia and New Zealanders, a literature review established that the at-risk groups for zinc deficiency are toddlers, adolescents (especially of Pacific and Aboriginal Ethnicities), institutionalised elderly and those suffering with diabetes.
ZInc is important for a number of processes in the body, including wound healing (prevention of permanent scar tissue formation), immune function and hormone synthesis, amongest many other uses. Zinc is essential for T Helper Cells, probably the most important cells in our immune system, as for slowing viral replication during infection. Furthermore, clinical trials have demonstrated for decades that oral zinc supplementation is an effective remedy for improving wound healing, as one study showed in diabetic foot ulcer patients.
Zinc and Hormones
There is a strong correlation between zinc status and testosterone levels in men. Low zinc status is associated with low testosterone in young and otherwise healthy men. Though testosterone is generally considered to be a male hormone this it is important for women as well where it supports sex drive, muscle mass and bone health.
Zinc inhibits activity of an enzyme called 5 alpha-reductase, responsible for the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone. The latter hormone has been linked to benign prostatic hyperplasia. Zinc is needed to support important antioxidant enzymes, called superoxide dismutase and metallothionein, making it an indirectly important antioxidant mineral.
Boosting the Anti-Viral Effects of Zinc
To increase the potency of zinc supplements they may be taken with natural ionophores. An ionophore binds to free zinc in the plasma and carries it through the plasma membrane, into the cell. A higher level of zinc inside the cell creates more potent benefits, such as natural antiviral effects. There are many natural ionophores found in plants, such as Curcumin, Quercetin and EGCG.
These ionophore nutrients are found in nature, though EGCG is more specific to Camellia sinensis or Green Tea. Herbs of Gold Quercetin Complex may be taken in combination with Ultra Zinc to promote intracellular zinc. Herbs of Gold Bio Curcumin 5400 contains a high level of Curcumin derived from Turmeric root to support cellular zinc uptake. Quercetin and Green Tea have been well known for decades to offer antiviral benefits, which may be due to, in part or full, their ionophore effects.
